November 7, 1867 – July 4, 1934

One of the worlds most famous scientists, Marie Curie and her husband made crucial strides in chemistry and pioneered the field of oncology with the discovery that certain exposure to radioactive elements can reduce the size of cancerous tumors. Curie was groundbreaking not only in her discoveries, but in her trailblazing contributions to women in science. She was the first woman ever awarded a Nobel Prize, the ONLY woman to ever be awarded two Nobel Prizes, and she was the first female professor at the University of Paris after the loss of her beloved husband. Marie Curie founded the first ever cancer treatment center with her "Radium Institute" which still does important research to this day as "The Curie Institute".
